IU names John Whelan associate vice president for human resources

  • June 9, 2014

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University has announced that John J. Whelan has been named associate vice president for human resources effective June 30, succeeding Dan Rives, who recently retired from the university.

Whelan, 46, brings nearly two decades of human resources experience, including 11 years in a university setting, to his new role. He has been the chief human resources officer at Baylor University for the past five years and has been a vice president and a member of the president's executive council since February 2014.

Whelan, a native of Boston, will serve as the top human resources executive at the university, which is one of Indiana’s largest employers with more than 20,000 workers across the state. He will report to Vice President and Chief Financial Officer MaryFrances McCourt.

"John brings a wealth of human resources experience, including significant leadership roles at two major universities, to IU and has a track record of implementing employee-focused initiatives that have strengthened every organization at which he has worked," McCourt said. "I am confident he has the strategic vision to advance the work of IU’s strong HR team built by Dan Rives, to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude for his long and outstanding service."

In addition to his work at Baylor, Whelan served as director of human resources at the University of Notre Dame from 2003 to 2009. Before that, he held human resources positions at Bristol-Myers Squibb, Gillette and the investment bank of Brown Brothers Harriman. He earned both his bachelor’s degree and his law degree from Notre Dame.

"It is a tremendous honor to join prestigious Indiana University, and I look forward to working with this talented team of HR professionals,” Whelan said. “My family and I are excited to return to our adopted home state of Indiana, having lived here for nearly 18 years. While we are thrilled to join the IU community, we also will miss Baylor University and the wonderful relationships we have developed there over the past five years."

Whelan was selected following an extensive national candidate search, which was aided by the executive search firm of Witt/Kieffer and managed by an internal search committee chaired by IU Vice President and General Counsel Jacqueline Simmons.

"We were fortunate to have an extremely strong candidate pool from which John rose to the top as the consensus choice for this important role," Simmons said. "John’s ability to articulate his vision for employee engagement made him an outstanding candidate and will serve him extremely well at IU."

Whelan and his wife, Molly, have five children ranging in age from 7 to 16, all of whom are string musicians who are looking forward to experiencing IU’s vibrant music scene, according to Whelan.
